A selection of both popular and colorful temperate deciduous trees mainly from Northeastern America and East Asia planted in parks, gardens, or streets including excellent specimen trees with wonderful floral display such as the Yoshino cherry, and Voss's laburnum (golden rain tree) or large, broad-ovate leaved trees such as the foxglove tree 'Lilacina', and Southern catalpa or the London plane tree.

LAUBWERK PLANTS KIT 10 – TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS TREES

The following 10 tree species are included in the Plants Kit 10. Each species comes in 36 variations per species, i.e. 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasonal aspects, for a total of 360 models per Kit.

SOUTHERN CATALPA

Catalpa bignonioides

Medium-sized, deciduous, spreading tree with an irregular, broad-rounded crown. Grey or yellowish to reddish brown bark. Large, broad-ovate, pale green leaves, pubescent below, opposite, or in threes. Short-pointed at the tip and rounded or heart-shaped at the base. Very ornamental, bell-shaped, fragrant, white flowers with purple and yellow inner markings bloom in late spring in many-flowered upright panicles. Fruit a long, slender bean-like green pod that matures to dark brown in autumn.

LOSS'S LABURNUM

Laburnum x watereri 'Vossii'

Small deciduous tree with a vase-shaped crown. Olive grey bark, darker with some roughness and fissuring on mature trunks. Alternate leaves composed of three leaflets. Spring leaves are bright green, mature leaves glabrous and blue-green turning yellow-green in autumn. Lavish display in late spring of long, drooping racemes of bright yellow, pea-shaped, fragrant flowers. Poisonous seeds. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

TULIP TREE

Liriodendron tulipifera

Large, stately, deciduous tree with a pyramidal to broad conical habit. Column-like trunk with brown, furrowed bark. Four-lobed leaves, heart-shaped or truncate or slightly wedge-shaped at base. State tree of Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana.

PERSIAN IRONWOOD

Parrotia persica

Small- to medium-sized deciduous tree or large shrub with a wide-spreading habit, often multi-stemmed. Smooth, pinkish-brown bark. Bark of mature trees exfoliates to leave attractive patches of cinnamon, pink, green, and pale yellow beneath. Broadly ovate leaves, alternately arranged, emerge reddish-purple in spring, mature to a lustrous, medium to dark green in summer, and change to variable shades of yellow, red and purple in autumn. Small but abundant crimson flowers on bare twigs in late winter and early spring.

FOXGLOVE TREE 'LILACINA'

Paulownia tomentosa 'Lilacina'

Fast-growing, medium-sized, deciduous tree with an upright to spreading, rounded crown. Thin, grayish brown bark with shallow fissures. Ovate or shallowly-lobed, large green leaves, slightly hairy above and densely hairy beneath. No autumn color. Profuse bloom of very fragrant, trumpet-shaped, pinkish-lavender flowers, which appear in mid spring in large panicles before the foliage. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

LONDON PLANE

Platanus x hispanica

Majestic large, fast-growing, deciduous tree, initially with a broadly conical, then extensive and with round crown. Attractively patterned bark, usually pale grey-green, smooth and exfoliating bark. Medium to dark green leaves are thick and stiff-textured, broad, palmately lobed, maple-like. The young leaves in spring are coated with fine stiff hairs at first, but by late summer the leaves are (nearly) hairless and turn a pale yellow-brown in autumn. Inconspicuous flowers. Clustered, burr-like fruits, which persist throughout winter. The original cross between Platanus occidentalis and Platanus orientalis may have occurred in the 17th century, after which this tree became widely planted in London and other major European cities because of its tolerance for urban pollution.

YOSHINO CHERRY

Prunus x yedoensis 'Somei-yoshino'

Small, deciduous tree with a spreading, broad-rounded, open crown. Dark reddish-brown bark. Elliptic to oval, serrate, dark green leaves, alternately arranged, turning yellow and with bronze tints in autumn. One of the most widely planted of flowering cherry trees in Japan today. It is considered one of the most spectacular of flowering temperate trees in cultivation.

PIN OAK

Quercus palustris

Smooth gray-brown bark usually develops ridging on mature trunks. Glossy, dark green leaves typically have five bristle-tipped lobes turning reddish-brown or bright crimson in autumn. Inconspicuous flowers. It is perhaps the most popular oak of eastern North America.

Attractive but quite inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers appear in clusters at the branch ends in early spring shortly before the leaves. Male and female flowers are carried on separate trees.

AMERICAN ELM

Ulmus americana

Medium to large, fast-growing, deciduous tree with a vase-shaped crown and a spreading umbrella-like canopy. Smooth, dark grey bark with deep ridges. Dark green simple leaves, alternately arranged, with double serrated leaf margins, typically turn an undistinguished yellow in autumn. Inconspicuous flowers, and fruits. Subtropical Desert Trees – 10 tree species of Laubwerk Plants in 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasons each, for architects and CG artists working in 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, SketchUp, and Houdini.

A selection of both attractive and common subtropical desert trees mainly from the deserts of Arizona, Texas, and Mexico planted in parks, gardens, or streets including showy specimen trees such as the Desert Museum palo verde, the Texas-mountain-laurel, and the graceful palo blanco tree.

LAUBWERK PLANTS KIT 14 – SUBTROPICAL DESERT TREES

The following 10 tree species are included in the Plants Kit 14. Each species comes in 36 variations per species, i.e. 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasonal aspects, for a total of 360 models per Kit.

BURGUNDY DESERT WILLOW

Chilopsis linearis 'Burgundy'

Deciduous shrub or small tree with an irregular, rounded or umbrella-shaped, spreading crown, and fairly loose, open branching. Smooth grey bark when young, developing rough fissures with age. Willow-like light-green leaves. Large, showy, trumpet-shaped, orchid-like, fragrant burgundy flowers. Blooms appear in terminal clusters from mid-spring through fall. Long bean-type seed pods that persist on branches during winter. The wild plant species is commonly seen in washes and along riverbanks. Cultivated for its large, showy flowers, graceful, airy structure, and tolerance of hot, dry climates. It attracts birds and butterflies and is also fire defensible.

TEXAS OLIVE

Cordia boissieri

Evergreen shrub or small tree with a symmetrical round crown. Typically multi-trunked, with attractive brown bark. Ovate, green-silver alternate leaves. Trumpet-shaped white flowers in terminal clusters appear year-round, if enough rainfall or irrigation is available. Otherwise, the showy blossoms with yellow throats appear from late spring to early summer. The olive-like fruits are ovoid fleshy drupes, first green, then ripening to a creamy white, relished by birds and other wildlife. Classy tree with very showy white flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

TEXAS-MOUNTAIN-LAUREL

Dermatophyllum secundiflorum

Evergreen shrub or small-to-medium-sized tree with a symmetrical, narrow upright or round crown. Usually multi-trunked, and rarely with a straight trunk, with fissured dark-grey to black bark. Dense glossy dark-green compound leaves, composed of leathery leaflets, rounded on the ends. Pendulous clusters of very fragrant violet-blue flowers in spring. Semi-woody pods with deep orange poisonous seeds. Popular ornamental plant due to its showy flowers and orange seeds.

TEXAS EBONY

Ebenopsis ebano

Slow-growing, evergreen to semi-deciduous tree with a dense, spreading crown. Smooth grey bark when young, becoming rough and fissured with age. Young branches extend in a characteristic zig-zag pattern. Lush, dark-green foliage, pinnate compound alternate leaf. Small musty-fragranced creamy-yellow puff-ball flowers in late spring to summer. Large brown seedpods. Cultivated in xeriscaping for its dense foliage and fragrant flowers, which strongly attract bees.

TENAZA 'SIERRA SPARKLER'

Havardia pallens 'Sierra Sparkler'

Semi-deciduous, fast-growing tree with an upright form, and an almost columnar growth habit. Thin, grey to reddish bark, which breaks into small flakes. Small, light-green compound leaves. Mimosa-like fragrant fluffy cream blossoms after rains in late spring to summer, which attract bees. Reddish-brown seed pods. Leaves resemble those of Sweet Acacia, producing an open canopy and filtered shade. The cultivar was selected for more flowers and fewer seed pods.

DESERT IRONWOOD

Olneya tesota

Evergreen to semi-evergreen, slow-growing, large shrub to single-to-multi-trunked tree, with a widely-spreading crown. Silvery-grey bark, which becomes rough with age. Bluish-green, pinnately compound leaves. Drops leaves before bloom and leafs out again during summer monsoons. Purple and pale-pink-to-white flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer. Light-reddish-brown seedpods. Trees are a beautiful and distinctive light-purple color when in full bloom. The wood is hard like iron and very dense, making it unusually heavy.

PALO BLANCO TREE

Mariosousa willardiana

Small-to-medium-sized slow-growing semi-evergreen tree with an airy graceful upright weeping habit and delicate open branching, slender when young but spreading elegantly with age. Distinctive smooth bark, white to reddish-yellow, peeling off and papery. May drop its grey-green leaves in a drought or cold spell. The lengthy needle-like leaf stalks remain prominently after the small leaflets drop, and hang gracefully from thin branches. Fragrant creamy-white flower spikes occur in late spring to summer, and occasionally throughout the year, followed by flattened seed pods. Wonderful visual accent tree with a picturesque silhouette, attractive bark, low maintenance requirements, and drought and heat resistance.

DESERT MUSEUM PALO VERDE

Parkinsonia 'Desert Museum'

Rapidly growing, drought-deciduous large shrub or small tree with a sturdy, upright branching habit. Attractive smooth rich-green stems and branches. Small bright-gray-green foliage, leafing out after rainfall. Brilliant masses of pea-like yellow blossoms appear in the spring for a dramatic display, and again intermittently into the summer if given extra water. It offers an unusual green-blue silhouette in gardens, and delicately-patterned light shade over patios. The tree was hybridized at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, and is a genetic cross between Parkinsonia microphylla, Parkinsonia florida, and Parkinsonia aculeata.

VELVET MESQUITE 'AZT'

Prosopis velutina 'AZT'

Small-to-medium-sized deciduous tree with short, forking trunk and open, spreading crown of crooked branches. Smooth reddish-brown young bark, with rough dark-brown trunk and older branches, while the young green branches are photosynthetic. Soft feathery dark-to-dusky-green foliage, with paler undersides. Bipinnately compound alternate leaves, which fold closed at night. Drooping greenish-yellow catkins in late spring, and with summer rains. Long, straight or slightly curved, straw-colored seed pods. Remarkable, uniquely Sonoran desert tree. Bees produce a fragrant honey from mesquites.

T ACACIA

Vachellia farnesiana

Medium-sized, fast-growing deciduous tree with an irregular, half-open, oval-to-ovoid crown. Yellowish grey-brown bark, deeply fissured in older trees. Young twigs are yellowish-brown and very pliable. Long, narrow, pointed leaves, dull green above and blue-green underneath, with a silky texture that causes them to appear silvery-white at a distance. Fall color is usually a pale yellow, but sometimes appears as a more saturated yellow. Catkins appear with the leaves in spring.

Subtropical Broadleaf Trees and Palms - 10 subtropical species in 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasons each, for architects and CG artists working in 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, and SketchUp.

An exclusive selection of subtropical trees and palms for special plantings in gardens and parks where a Mediterranean or exotic atmosphere is desired — such as the western strawberry tree, with its exotic strawberry-like fruit, or the dwarf palm, with its beautiful, fan-shaped leaves.

The following 10 tree species are included in the Plants Kit 15. Each species comes in 36 variations per species, i.e. 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasonal aspects, for a total of 360 models per Kit.

LAUBWERK PLANTS KIT 15 – SUBTROPICAL TREES AND PALMS

STRAWBERRY TREE

Arbutus unedo

Slow-growing, mostly multi-stemmed evergreen shrub, or small tree with spreading broad round crown. Bark initially reddish-brown, increasingly speckled with grey as it ages, peeling off regularly. Hard, mostly lancet-shaped leaves with serrated margins in shiny medium green. Bell-shaped white to pink flowers in autumn and winter. Spherical, slightly prickly orange to red fruits reminiscent of strawberries. The conspicuous ornamental fruit is suitable for consumption and is used to produce jam and liqueur.

EUROPEAN NETTLE TREE

Celtis australis

Picturesquely-growing medium to large deciduous tree, with spreading, slightly irregular, broad, round to umbrella-shaped crown. Smooth grey beech-like trunk and woolly greenish shoots. Alternately-arranged strongly dentate leaves, ovate to elliptical, with rough dark-green top and soft hairy grey-green underside. Flowers very small and rather inconspicuous. Spherical fruits initially reddish, later becoming purple- to violet-brown, with sweetish, edible pulp. Important fauna tree for bees, butterflies, and moths.

MEDITERRANEAN DWARF PALM

Chamaerops humilis

Small, slow-growing palm, mostly multi-stemmed, with bushy shape and compact, dense crown. Trunk covered with brown fibers, similar to the hemp palm. Rigid, fan-shaped, semicircular leaves with pointed, lanceolate, blue or grey-green plumage, and spiny leaf stalks. Large, bright-yellow flower spikes in spring. Globular to ovate, yellow- to later reddish-brown berries. Originally from the coastal regions of the western Mediterranean.

PINK SNOWBALL TREE

Dombeya x cayeuxii

Fast-growing, medium evergreen shrub or multi-stem tree with round crown. Smooth bark only slightly grooved. Large, dentate, alternate, petiolate medium-green leaves. From October to March, has round clusters of pink flowers, similar to Hydrangea flowers, which attract many bees and butterflies. Species is named after the horticulturist Henri Cayeux, who is said to have created it.

SOUTHERN BLUE GUM

Eucalyptus globulus

Medium-sized to large coniferous evergreen tree with a conic, typically very narrow columnar crown. The dark green foliage grows in dense sprays. The seed cones are ovoid or oblong, green at first, maturing brown about 2 years after pollination. The dark green "exclamation mark" tree shape is considered as characteristic signature of Mediterranean landscapes. Trees are very long-lived.

COMMON FIG

Ficus carica

Fast-growing deciduous shrub or small tree with a broad, wide-spreading, strongly-branched crown and a low canopy. Trunk mostly twisted, gnarled, or curved, with greyish-brown bark and clearly recognizable lenticels. Hand-shaped, medium-green leaves with three to five lobes and a rough upper surface, and softer, slightly pubescent underside. Has no visible showy flower, but a flower-bearing organ (syconium), which turns into a fig after pollination. Tasty large oblong or pear-shaped fruits, initially green, then yellow or brown-violet later. The plant can only be pollinated through the so-called fig wasp, which enters through a tiny opening into the syconium.

JACARANDA

Jacaranda mimosifolia

Medium-sized deciduous tree with bright, broad, round spreading crown. Thin greyish-brown bark. Double pinnate leaves consisting of many narrow elliptic light- to medium-green leaflets. Showy, beautiful, bell-shaped flowers, bright blue-violet, loosely connected in pyramidal panicles. Leathery wooden red-brown capsule fruit. Important ornamental wood in subtropical regions.

SOUTHERN MAGNOLIA

Magnolia grandiflora

Small to large, partly multi-stemmed evergreen tree with spreading, broad, conical crown. Hairy, tomentose bark on the young twigs; older branches and trunk have bald thin grey bark. Large leathery reverse-ovate or elliptic leaves with apex. Upper lobes are glossy dark-green and smooth, while the underside is red-brown and slightly pubescent. Large, cup-shaped white flowers are showy and fragrant. Large, slightly hairy brown compound fruit. A very important and characteristic ornamental shrub in the southern states of the USA.

HOLM OAK

Quercus ilex

Large, often multi-stemmed, slow-growing wintergreen deciduous tree with spherical crown and picturesque shape. Smooth dark-grey bark, increasingly furrowed in old age. Alternately arranged leathery ovate to lanceolate dentate leaves with glossy dark-green top, and felty, whitish to greyish underside. Yellow catkins from spring to early summer. Long-ovate or round light-green acorns. Characteristic tree of the Mediterranean climate zone, playing a major role in traditional pig fattening in the Iberian peninsula.

DESERT FAN PALM

Washingtonia filifera

Large, robust, fast-growing palm with a high canopy and a loose, open crown. Brown to reddish-brown and grey, barrel-shaped trunk, increasingly cracked in old age. Huge, hanging, fan-shaped leaves, from yellowish-green to silver to greenish-grey, with drooping white fibers. White to yellow blossom. Dark-brown to black fruits. Without maintenance, the dead brown leaves remain hanging on the palm trees, sometimes covering the entire trunk like a skirt, thus the alternate name “petticoat palm”.

Temperate Topiary Trees – 10 broadleaf tree species of Laubwerk Plants in 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasons each, for architects and CG artists working in 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, and SketchUp.

A spectacular collection of ten outstanding topiary. This Kit includes a wide range of beautiful plants which are popular for their specific, nearly architectural shape. For example the wonderful darf southern catalpa 'Nana' with its almost perfectly globular crown as well as the hornbeam with its wide range of different geometric shapes.

LAUBWERK PLANTS KIT 16 – TEMPERATE TOPIARY TREES

The following 10 tree species are included in the Plants Kit 16. Each species comes in 36 variations per species, i.e. 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasonal aspects, for a total of 360 models per Kit.

ELSRIJK FIELD MAPLE

Acer campestre 'Elsrijk'

Small-sized deciduous tree, both as an espalier and as a high stemmed tree with spherical crown. Brown bark with vertical and horizontal cracks. Small, three- to five-lobed, richly green leaves with showy, bright yellow autumn colours. Small, yellow-green flower spikes in May. Characteristic light green, doubled wingnut. An American selection made from established city trees in Ohio in 1953. Introduced to the Netherlands in 1985, where it has become the most popular field maple cultivar. Is often used as a street tree, furthermore it is a beautiful ornamental solitary shrub for gardens. Compared to the original Acer campestre this species is free of mildew.

EUROPEAN HORNBEAM

Carpinus betulus

Small-sized, deciduous tree, formed as beehive, trapezium and espalier. Silvery to dark gray bark and gray-black branches. Alternate, fresh green, ovate to elliptical leaves with yellow-brown colour in autumn. Yellowish inconspicuous catkins in May and inconspicuous fruits. Due to its great structure, excellent tolerance to cutting, and attractive growth hornbeam has long been used for pleaching and training. Pleaching refers to the horizontal training of the branches. This practice is an ancient tradition in European gardens, e.g. for creating avenues in grand gardens. Nowadays used as a neat and formal approach in urban gardens.

DWARF SOUTHERN CATALPA

Catalpa bignonioides 'Nana'

Grafted, high-stemmed, slow-growing, small deciduous tree with globular, dense crown. Thin trunk with grey, flat rilled bark. Large, fresh-green, heart-shaped leaves that lie one above the other, late in leafing out, spectacular yellow autumn color. Usually no flowering, therefore no fruits. The tree can be pruned vigorously every few years to encourage the crown. Widely applied in small gardens, containers, patio gardens, on squares, and round-abouts. Excellent tree for planting in a mixed border, where spring-flowering plants and bulbs will get plenty of sun before the leaves emerge, and then providing welcome shade in the summer months. The resistance to pollution lends to its use in street plantings.

CORNELIAN CHERRY 'JOLICO'

Cornus mas 'Jolico'

Slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree, shaped both as a cylinder, as a multi-stemmed umbrella or as a globe shaped topiary. With a red-brown scale-shaped bark that partially peels off. Elliptic-pointed leaves in dark green, which turn reddish-yellow in autumn. Striking, beautiful yellow flower umbels in spring. Tasty, decorative, oval stone fruits in brownish-red. Fruits contain a high amount of vitamin C and are suitable for making jams, jellies and liqueurs.

CRAB APPLE 'EVERESTE'

Malus 'Evereste'

Deciduous large shrub or small tree, formed both as roof-trained, as multi-stemmed roof-trained and as an espalier. Dark brown, bald bark on the trunk. Dark green, medium-sized, oval leaves, which turn yellow-orange in autumn and remain hanging for a long time. White, cup-shaped flower in early May to mid-June. Higly ornamentaly, small, spherical, bright fruits from orange-red to red. Beautiful ornamental topiary, which is perfect as a solitary tree for gardens and parks.

PERSIAN IRONWOOD 'BELLA'

Parrotia persica 'Bella'

Slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree, formed both as a cylinder, as a multitrunk umbrella and as an espalier. Glabrous olive branches and purple to light gray bark on the trunk. Off-white, leathery, shiny, obovate leaves that become increasingly dark green and turn maroon in fall. Brown, small capsule fruit. 'Bella' is a selection from seedlings grown using seeds collected in the wild in the North Caucasus, selected for the good ascending stem and balanced crown structure. Used in (roof) gardens but also in streets, avenues, containers and on squares. Fantastic climate tree for urban conditions. Robust, hardy and very tolerant except for paving and soil compaction.

MALBURG PLANE

Platanus x hispanica 'Malburg'

Fast-growing, deciduous large tree, formed both as a block, as a branched candlestick and as a roof-trained topiary. Showy peeling camouflage-like bark from gray-green to yellow-green. Large, medium-green, hand-shaped, serrated leaves. Yellow-green, inconspicuous, small flowers in May. Showy, spiny, medium-sized, spherical capsule fruit. Elegant Dutch cultivar raised from a selected avenue tree in Huissen in 1981. Significantly smaller than original species, much more compact, oval to broadly oval crown and therefore well suited for avenues and narrower gardens. Good on all soils, tolerant of pollution and hard surfaces.

PORTUGAL LAUREL 'ANGUSTIFOLIA'

Prunus lusitanica 'Angustifolia'

Evergreen shrub or small-sized tree, formed both as a beehive, as a beehive on stick and as a cone on stick. Smooth, black-brown bark and purple to purple-green branches. Dark green, slightly leathery, oblong egg-shaped pointed leaves with distinctly serrated leaf margin. Slightly fragrant, creamy white grape-like inflorescences. Small, dark red to black purple fruits. Has been widely used since Victorian times to create Italian style gardens. Exotic appearance. Frost hardy tree that does well in full sun but thrives almost anywhere.

CALLERY PEAR 'CHANTICLEER'

Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’

Small to medium-sized, deciduous tree, formed botah as a column with a short stem, as an espalier and as a roof-trained topiary. Thornless, bare, brownish bark on the trunk. Alternate, ovate to roundish, large, dark green leaves with beautiful autumn colours from yellow to orange and scarlet and purple. Numerous white umbels in spring. Fruits are small greenish-brownish pears. Important nutrient tree for birds and bees. Cultivar bred by Edward Scanlon in the 1950s with its parent plants brought from China in the early 20th century. Attractive, low maintenance tree with a tolerance of pollution making it a favorite with architects, landscapers, and gardeners. One of the first trees to come into leaf and of the lastto lose its leaves. Therefore, one of the best deciduous trees to be used for screening.

SMALL-LEAVED LIME 'GREENSPIRE'

Tilia cordata 'Greenspire'

Fast-growing, deciduous, medium-sized tree, both as a block, as an espalier and as a roof-trained topiary. Ridged, dark brown bark and green branches, which will turn redbrown. Large, round, glossy, dark green leaves with heart-shaped leaf base. Fragrant yellow to cream-colored flower spikes. Yellowish round, bald fruits that are becoming increasingly fuzzy. Uniformly growing American selection that was bred in the USA in 1961. Valuable for insects. Tolerates paving, tree anchors into the ground less well than does the species.

The following 10 shrub and bush species are included in the Plant Kit 17. Each species comes in 36 variations per species, i.e. 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasonal aspects, for a total of 360 models per Kit.

COASTAL WATTLE
Acacia sophorae
